A Little Town

Sonoita, Arizona, is a pretty special place, with lots of stuff to tell, but to be honest, there’s only three things you need to know:

  • Sonoita is a lot higher and a lot cooler than Tucson or Phoenix – the nightly low temperature in Phoenix is a little lower than our daily high temperature.

  • This is Arizona’s premier wine country, officially designated by the ATF as an American Viticultural Area, with active wineries for over 40 years, and ranches and farms going back generations to the 1830’s – the area has been farmed for well over 4,000 years.

  • It’s just 45 minutes from Tucson, and the directions to Hops & Vines involve exactly two turns once you’re on I-10: Turn South/Right on scenic Highway 83, go 16 miles, East/Left on 82 (at the stop sign), then go 2 miles and it’s on your left.

A Little History

In the mid-1970’s, a soil scientist named Dr. Gordon Dutt at the University of Arizona came to the Sonoita area after helping farmers in Yuma deal with a plant disease. Surprised to find that there were no wineries in the state, he earned a grant and after much research eventually founded our neighbor winery, Sonoita Vineyards. Since then, the area has flourished, and we feel lucky to be planting in a place that has such good soil – it’s very similar to the soil composition in Burgundy, France. The warm days really develop the skin of the grapes, which ripens them, and the 20-30°F drop in temperature maintain the acidity. That balance between the ripening and acidity is the key to a great wine, and we love working our vinyards in this great climate.

The vineyard plantings are 4,500 to 5,000 feet (1,400 to 1,500 m) above sea level, some of the highest in North America. We share a lot of land with ranchers, surrounded by rolling, grass-covered hills. There are even some pine and oak forests nearby, and 30 miles or so to the South is the U.S.-Mexico border.

Stay A While

Although wine is a great reason to come down to AZ Hops and Vines, eventually you will want to eat, and Sonoita has some very fine restaurants – some of the best in Arizona. There are also gift shops, artisan studios and other cottage-industry businesses here, ranging from Native American jewelry and rugs, fine apparel, alpacas, cycling, caverns, hiking, handmade pottery, and all sorts of other stuff.

We also have some really nice local bed-and-breakfasts and ranches, because we’re pretty sure all that isn’t possible in just one day. Just be sure to check in with us to tell us the stories, and send us photos on Facebook.

What People Are Saying

“Recently visited Hops and Vines again. With COVID-19 we were not sure what to expect, but the experience was fantastic. The service was quick, the women were friendly, the place had sanitizer all over and they recommended distancing. The tastings were placed in cupcake holders to limit contact, the outdoor seating provided plenty of space and options to enjoy the afternoon, the sangria was again amazing! We also opted to try a wine slushy which was fantastic for a warm afternoon!!”

— Andrea W.

“These ladies make some really great wine and know how to have some serious fun. We found this winery about 5 years ago and find ourselves stalking them for a bottle of their Fluffer. If it is not available they have plenty to choose from. I really enjoy their laid back Sat atmosphere with the weekend cocktails they make.”

— Stacy J.

“This winery has amazing outdoor space including animals. The wine sample includes pairings with chips and other small food items. The sample is good and gave us an idea of everything they had. It was a cold day and they informed us they had warm sangria so we went with that and was pleasantly surprised.”

— Mike C.
